Building a Research Community: Mobile Health Map is both a resource for research and a forum for collaboration. The project links researchers with health care providers to share best practices and demonstrate the impact of Mobile Health Clinics. By promoting collaboration between key stakeholders, the project will lay the groundwork for future advocacy.
St. Joseph Mobile Health Clinic is a licensed mobile community health clinic providing primary healthcare, prevention, and education services in Sonoma County California. It serves approximately 1,400 low-income families annually who are without a regular primary care physician and who have difficulty obtaining affordable healthcare in their community. Services are offered at a variety of community-based sites throughout Sonoma County responding to locally identified need and currently include Santa Rosa, Windsor, Boyes Hot Springs, and Petaluma. The St. Joseph Mobile Health Clinic transcends language, culture and access to care barriers by bringing healthcare directly to those who need it most.
A pioneer in the growing trend in public health practice, the Family Van, like other mobile health clinics, reaches people who typically do not—or cannot—access primary health care. Each year, our staff and volunteers provide culturally appropriate health education, screening, and prevention services, as well as referrals to medical and social service agencies, to some 5,000 vulnerable and underserved Boston residents. Among other programs, we offer testing for hypertension, cholesterol, blood glucose, glaucoma, pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS. Our services are often the only link to prevention and medical care for many who come aboard the Family Van. And since many of our clients have visited the Van every week for several years, they really are like family.
Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics (RMYC) operates two Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles. The Care Mobiles are pediatric clinics on wheels that travel to schools and other community sites in low-income neighborhoods, providing care to uninsured children and adolescents in Denver, Colorado. While one Care Mobile provides primary healthcare services, the other provides preventive oral care. Both Care Mobile services are exclusively for uninsured children and adolescents for only $10 per visit. This fee is waived for families that demonstrate an inability to pay. In 2007, The RMYC expanded its Mobile Health Program to bring health and dental care to rural communities in Colorado.
St Anna's Medical Mission is a mobile unit that serves New Orleans neighborhoods providing holistic healthcare and outreach to low-income and under-served adults. Their goal is to be an important link to rebuilding access to quality healthcare for all people in our community. Services include blood pressure, diabetes and depression screenings, initial medical care for non-emergency conditions, referral services to community-based clinics, flu shots, and health education. By consistently being available and providing services with respect and dignity, they earn trust and empower patients to become more active in their own healthcare.
Francine's Friends is a mobile mammography program in Fort Wayne, Indiana supported by a partnership between Francine’s Friends, Parkview Hospital, and the Breast Diagnostic Center. The program was established in 2005 by local women in honor of a friend who lost her battle with breast cancer.
The program travels to businesses, clinics, stores, churches, fitness centers, and many other locations in northeast Indiana, making it convenient and easy for all women age 40 and over to receive an annual screening. Funding is available for women without insurance or the ability to pay. They had over 3,200 visits in 2009 alone.
The New Orleans Children’s Health Project is a program, developed as a partnership between Children’s Health Fund and Tulane School of Medicine. The medical and mental health teams, work together to address the physical, mental, emotional, and social well being of the low-income children and families. Services provided at not cost include, but are not limited to: comprehensive medical care; management of acute and chronic illnesses; weight management; case management; and referrals to specialty care. Mental health services include psychiatric assessments and treatment; counseling; and case management.
Located in Columbus County North Carolina, Mobile Medical & Dental Outreach is a faith based mobile clinic that screens those at higher risk for hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. They reach North Carolina’s most remote rural areas and have seen 600 people since opening in the fall of 2007. In this rural setting, access to quality health care and health promotion is limited. They educate community members about nutrition and other lifestyle modifications to reduce risk factors. Those with unfavorable screening results are referred to partnering agencies or private medical clinic for follow-up care.
